- Description: The MOT quietly becomes the audit: how declared mileage is checked against test records, and what a top-up or credit looks like.

> **Quick answer:** eVED does not rely on new inspections. At each renewal your declared reading is compared with your previous estimate (producing a **balancing payment or a credit**), and the whole thing is cross-checked against the **mileage recorded at your MOT**, which is already a public record. The proposed extra checks for cars under three years old were dropped in the July 2026 response; those cars simply reconcile at their first MOT.

## The cycle

- Renewal: reading + estimate, eVED charged on the estimate.
- During the year: you can top up if you are driving more than expected.
- Next renewal: new reading, difference settled (pay the shortfall or carry a credit), then a fresh estimate.
- MOT: the tester's recorded mileage is the independent verification point.

## Why the MOT record now matters more

MOT mileage has always been the clocking detector; from 2028 it is also the tax reference. A gap between the MOT reading and your declared reading is a flag. Check your own history, and any car you buy, on our [MOT history checker](https://www.logbook.co.uk/mot-history-check/), which plots every recorded mileage.

## Enforcement

Routine enforcement is the reconciliation itself. DVLA additionally keeps the power to require an examination at a specified location where there is reasonable suspicion of odometer fraud; the government expects that power to be used rarely. ## FAQs

**What if my MOT is months after my renewal?**
Reconciliation uses the readings you declare at renewal; the MOT reading is the check against them, whenever it falls.

**Will I get money back if I drive less?**
The design includes credits and refunds where the estimate exceeds actual mileage.
