- Description: Three years from first registration — not from when you bought it. Finding the real date, the taxi/ambulance exceptions, and what happens if you miss it.

> **Quick answer:** A car needs its first MOT **three years after it was first registered** — the date on the V5C, not the date you bought it (crucial with pre-registered and nearly-new cars). Some vehicles need testing at **one year** instead: taxis, private-hire vehicles and ambulances. Miss the date and you can’t legally drive (except to a pre-booked test), your insurance position weakens, and driving without an MOT risks a fine of up to **£1,000**.

## Finding the real date

- **V5C:** the “date of first registration” is the clock’s start — add three years.
- **Bought nearly-new?** A “6-month-old” pre-registered car’s MOT falls 2½ years after *your* purchase — earlier than intuition says.
- Set the reminder — DVSA offers free MOT reminders by text or email.

## The one-year exceptions

Taxis and private hire vehicles, and ambulances, are tested annually from the first anniversary of registration. (Larger goods vehicles live under a separate annual test regime entirely.)

## Before the first test

Three-year-old cars fail most often on the boring stuff: **bulbs, wipers, tyres, screenwash**. Five minutes of checks protects a first-time pass — and a clean sheet from test one starts the car’s [public MOT record](https://www.logbook.co.uk/mot-history-check/) the way you’ll want it when you sell.

## FAQs

**Is there a grace period?**
No. The day after the third anniversary without a test, the car has no MOT.

**Can I test earlier than 3 years?**
Yes, any time — and from then on you’re on annual renewals from that date. Most owners test at the deadline using the [month-early rule](https://www.logbook.co.uk/how-early-can-you-mot-uk/).
