- Description: A month minus a day: the earliest you can test while keeping your renewal date — and the date printed on your certificate that makes it foolproof.

> **Quick answer:** You can have the MOT done up to **a month (minus a day) before the current one expires** and keep your existing renewal date — the new certificate runs from the old expiry, not the test day, so you lose nothing. Test any earlier than that and the new MOT runs 12 months from the test date, shaving days off your cycle. The earliest keep-your-date day is printed on your current certificate.

## How the maths works

Current MOT expires **15 September**. Test any time from **16 August** onwards and your new expiry is 15 September *next year* — a certificate that effectively lasts up to 13 months. Test on 10 August and the new expiry becomes 9 August next year: you’ve permanently shifted your date earlier.

## Why test early at all?

- **Time to fix failures without expiry pressure** — fail three weeks early and your old MOT is still valid while you sort repairs (majors only — a dangerous defect still grounds the car).
- **Holidays and work** — book around life instead of a deadline.
- **Selling soon?** A long fresh MOT is one of the cheapest value-adds a seller can buy.

## FAQs

**Where do I find my exact earliest date?**
Printed on the current certificate ("earliest date you can present your vehicle for test") — or work back a month-minus-a-day from expiry.

**Can I drive if I fail an early test but my old MOT is valid?**
For major defects, the certificate position says yes until expiry — but the car must genuinely be roadworthy. Dangerous defects: no driving, full stop.

**Does taxing the car need the new MOT?**
Tax checks that an MOT is valid on the day — either certificate works during the overlap.
