> **Quick answer:** Vehicles first registered (or manufactured) **more than 40 years ago** are exempt from the MOT — it’s a **rolling** exemption, so more cars qualify every year — *provided* the vehicle hasn’t been **“substantially changed”** in the last 30 years. You claim it by declaring exemption (form **V112**) when you tax the vehicle. Exempt does not mean unaccountable: driving an unroadworthy vehicle remains an offence at any age, and many owners keep voluntary MOTs for exactly that reason.

## Who qualifies

- 40+ years since first registration — rolling, checked at the point you tax it.
- No “substantial change” in the last 30 years: different engine type, altered chassis/monocoque, changed suspension or steering type can all disqualify. Period-appropriate replacements and like-for-like restoration are fine.

## How to claim it

- Tax the vehicle as normal (many will also be in the free *historic* tax class from 40 years).
- Declare the exemption — the **V112** form at the Post Office, or the equivalent declaration in the online taxing flow.
- Nothing to renew annually beyond taxing; the declaration is your statement that the vehicle qualifies.

## Should you still MOT a classic?

Plenty of owners do, voluntarily: it’s a £55-ish independent inspection, insurers like it, buyers trust it, and the [public MOT record](https://www.logbook.co.uk/mot-history-check/) keeps building — which supports value in a way “trust me” doesn’t. ## FAQs

**Is exemption automatic at 40 years?**
No — nothing changes until you declare it when taxing. Until then the MOT requirement stands.

**Who decides “substantially changed”?**
You self-assess against the guidance — and you carry the liability if that assessment is wrong. If in doubt, keep testing.
