Smart Tachograph 2 Deadlines: What UK Operators Must Do by December 2026

What's changing: Two key Smart Tachograph 2 deadlines hit UK operators in 2026. By 1 July 2026, vans and HGVs over 2.5 tonnes used for international hire or reward must have Smart Tachograph 2 fitted. From 24 December 2026, all newly registered goods vehicles must have a Smart Tachograph 2. Separately, HGVs on international UK-EU journeys must now produce 56 days of tachograph data at roadside checks (up from 28). Plan retrofits ahead — non-compliance stops the affected journeys.

The big change: vans over 2.5t now in scope

Historically, tachograph rules applied mainly to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. The July 2026 change extends Smart Tachograph 2 requirements to vans and goods vehicles over 2.5 tonnes used for international hire or reward — bringing many lighter commercial vehicles into the tachograph regime for the first time. UK-only operations of these vehicles are not affected in the same way, but operators running into the EU must comply.

The 56-day data rule

HGVs used on international transport journeys between the UK and EU must be able to produce 56 days of tachograph data — including manual records — at roadside checks, up from the previous 28-day requirement. Drivers and operators need to ensure their download and record-keeping routines capture and retain the full 56 days.

What operators must do

  1. Audit your fleet — identify which vehicles are affected by each deadline
  2. Plan retrofits — book Smart Tachograph 2 installation ahead of 1 July 2026 for international vehicles (installer capacity tightens near deadlines)
  3. Update download routines — ensure driver card (28-day) and vehicle unit (56-day) downloads continue, and that 56 days of data is available for international journeys
  4. Check newly ordered vehicles — anything newly registered from 24 December 2026 must have Smart Tachograph 2 from the factory
  5. Train drivers on the new tachograph and the 56-day data requirement

Why it matters

  • Vehicles without the required tachograph cannot legally run the affected journeys
  • DVSA roadside enforcement checks the tachograph generation and data
  • Operator licence consequences for systemic non-compliance
  • Smart Tachograph 2's remote enforcement makes roadside detection faster

How this fits the wider rules

The tachograph generation is only part of compliance — the underlying drivers' hours limits (9h daily, 56h weekly, 4.5h break) and Working Time rules still apply. See our complete tachograph rules guide, operator records guide, and drivers' hours guide.

FAQs

Does the December 2026 deadline affect my existing vehicles?

The 24 December 2026 deadline applies to newly registered goods vehicles. Existing vehicles aren't required to retrofit under that specific date — but international operations face the separate July 2026 retrofit requirement.

Do UK-only operators need to act?

The July 2026 over-2.5t requirement is focused on international hire/reward journeys. UK-only operators should still plan for Smart Tachograph 2 on newly registered vehicles from December 2026.

What's the difference between Smart Tachograph 1 and 2?

Smart Tachograph 2 (from August 2023 on new vehicles) adds enhanced anti-tampering, more frequent GNSS position recording, and remote enforcement capability over the first-generation smart tachograph.

How much does a Smart Tachograph 2 retrofit cost?

Typically £400-£700 per vehicle including fitting and calibration. Book early — installer capacity is limited near deadlines.
