Renault Service History: Every Way to Check It (UK)

Quick answer: Renault has no public online portal where anyone can look up a car's service history. Franchised Renault dealers record work digitally against the VIN (roughly 2012 onward) and any Renault dealer can print the record. Owners can also see maintenance information for their own car in the My Renault app, but that only works once the car is yours. Before buying, combine a dealer printout with the free gov.uk MOT history check and the invoice file, and on an early Zoe, check the battery paperwork before anything else.

How to check a Renault service history

The routes, in order of usefulness:

  • A franchised Renault dealer printout: since roughly 2012, Renault dealers have recorded service work digitally against the VIN instead of stamping a paper book. Any franchised Renault dealer can look the record up and print it. Some do it free, some charge a small admin fee; phone ahead and ask.
  • My Renault app: owners can add their car by VIN or registration and see maintenance and appointment information for their own vehicle. Useful once you own the car, no help before you buy.
  • Free MOT history check (gov.uk): every MOT result, recorded mileage and advisory back to 2005, free, by registration. It will not show servicing, but it is the fastest free sanity check on mileage and condition claims.
  • The paper service book and invoice file: the primary evidence on older cars, and still the only trace of independent garage work on newer ones.
  • Asking the servicing garage directly: if invoices name an independent garage, that garage can usually confirm dates, mileages and work done from its own records.

A warning about paid "service history check" websites

Search for a Renault service history check and you will find a cluster of websites offering the "official dealer record" for roughly 10 to 13 pounds. What they sell is retrieval of the same digital record a franchised dealer holds. They are not the manufacturer, and unlike Jaguar Land Rover's free public portal, Renault does not run an official self-serve lookup. Before paying a middleman, ask a franchised dealer, who can print the identical record and will often do it for nothing.

Model by model: what to verify

Zoe

  • Battery ownership first: many early Zoes were sold with the battery leased separately from the car under a monthly hire contract. Establish whether the battery is owned or leased before you discuss price, and see the paperwork; a lease transfers to you with its monthly cost.
  • Check annual service entries exist and any battery or charging-related workshop visits are recorded.
  • Ask a dealer to confirm outstanding recalls against the VIN.

Clio and Captur

  • On-time oil services on the small turbo petrols are the record that matters most.
  • EDC automatic gearbox: check for any gearbox service or software entries, and pair the record with a test drive; hesitation plus no history is a walk-away signal.
  • Cambelt-engined versions need the belt change on schedule: find the invoice, not a verbal assurance.

Megane and Kadjar

  • Same oil, belt and EDC logic as Clio and Captur.
  • Diesels used in town need DPF-related evidence: motorway-run claims are nice, invoices are better.

What a healthy record looks like

Dealer entries at scheduled intervals, mileage stepping in line with the free MOT record, belt changes invoiced on time on cambelt engines, and on a Zoe, unambiguous battery paperwork. Renaults are often serviced independently after warranty: that is fine when the invoices exist and name the garage.

FAQs

Can I check a Renault's service history online for free?
Not as a buyer. Renault has no public lookup. Owners can see their own car's maintenance information in the My Renault app; buyers should ask a franchised dealer to print the record and run the free gov.uk MOT history check.

Can I see a Renault's service history before I buy it?
Yes: ask the seller for the paper trail, and ask any franchised Renault dealer to print the digital record for the VIN. Dealers will generally do this on request, sometimes for a small fee.

How do I know if a Zoe's battery is leased?
Ask the seller directly and demand the paperwork. Battery hire was a separate monthly contract on many early Zoes, it survives the sale, and the hire company must approve the transfer. No paperwork means assume a lease until proven otherwise.

Does the digital record show independent garage servicing?
No. Only franchised network work appears. Independent work lives in invoices, which is a normal healthy history for an older Renault provided the invoices actually exist.
