eVED Calculator: What Pay-Per-Mile EV Tax Will Cost You (UK, 2028)
Enter your annual mileage and see what the 2028 pay-per-mile charge costs per year and per month, for electric and plug-in hybrid cars.
From 1 April 2028, electric and plug-in hybrid cars pay a mileage charge on top of normal road tax: 3p per mile for battery-electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids, charged on the mileage you declare at each tax renewal. Enter your annual mileage to see the yearly and monthly figure.
How the charge is collected
- At each tax renewal from April 2028 you give DVLA an odometer reading and an estimate of next year's mileage; eVED is charged on the estimate, payable annually or monthly (the Treasury's own example: 5,000 miles at 3p = £150 a year, £12.50 a month).
- At the end of the period the next reading is reconciled against the estimate, with a balancing payment or credit, and cross-checked against the mileage recorded at your MOT.
- Hydrogen fuel-cell cars are also in scope; vans are not in the initial design.
Rates and dates are those confirmed in HM Treasury's July 2026 consultation response and draft legislation; Parliament can amend them before 2028. We will update this page if they change.
